The present study investigated the integral role of religion and culture in translation of humor and also to explore the relationship between ideology and the ideology of the target text translator. The main focus was to discover how figurative languages could be transferred from source text into target text. The research corpus is J.D. Salinger’s (1951) social novel The Catcher in the Rye, which is believed to contain ideological, political, and socio-cultural terms. The corpus also involves two Persian translations of the foregoing novel by Ahmad Karimi (1966) and Najafi (1998) done before and after the Islamic Revolution, respectively. The researcher had critical look into the original text and its two Persian translations .The words in the source text have ideological loads and their equivalents in the translations are obvious to be ideologically influenced by political, humor and socio-cultural factors of the time. The findings of this study would help analysts realize once again that translation is not only a matter of transferring lexical items from one language to another, but a product of a decision-making process undertaken by the agents of the act of translation. This study proves to be beneficial for educational planners who wish to include the ideological aspects of language and of translation in their program. Also, translation evaluation and criticism is another field of study that can take advantage of this survey and similar studies.
